Background

Jeepney has an interesting and colourful history. After WWII many GI Army jeeps were left behind in Manila. These were put to use and converted into public vehicles. To detract from their origins these jeeps were painted by their owners in bold and unique designs. These colourful vehicles could be found all around the streets of the Manila and were a firm part of this Filipino cityscape.
The brand Jeepney was inspired by this wonderful display of art and originality. Based in Seattle Jeepney was set up in 2003 by a team of likeminded people including Karlo Reyes (now Creative Director). Reyes had previously been a graphic designer. He met his then to be business partner Rex Korrell when working for a local magazine. Reyes made a few logo t-shirts for the Filipino festival (Pista sa Nayon). These proved a surprise hit and Reyes started working with Korrell on a more extensive streetwear range which launched as Jeepney in late 2003.
Jeepney aimed to embrace this cultural and artistic phenomenon Manila and turn it into a viable design ethic. Jeepney is all about bold, expressive art work and freedom of design.
