Background

New Era has a long and rich history spanning over 9 decades. This leading streetwear brand began life as a small family business. The founder of the New Era Cap Company was Ehrhardt Koch. His family had moved to the United States from Germany in the late 1800's and settled in New York. Koch started working in the headgear trade at just 16 years old for the Miller Brother's Cap Company. Although he rose to the position of cutting department manager Koch was unable to progress any further. He decided to set up his own headwear company and in 1920 the New Era Cap Company was founded.
At first Koch employed just 14 people including family members. The New Era Cap Company began crafting a fashionable cap of the time known as the Gatsby. This proved popular and was soon distributed through leading menswear stores in the city. It was not until the 1930's though that business really started to take off. The company reinvented itself in line with the nation's greatest pastime and started to produce one of the defining hats of the 20th century â€“ the baseball cap.
The New Era Cap Company was soon providing hats directly to Major and Minor League teams, high schools, and universities. By the 1960's New Era was one of the leading headgear labels in the business and had a strong international presence.
To this day New Era is one of the most popular hat and cap makers in the world and provides a wide range of leading street style and sports headgear.

Defining Styles

From 1954 onwards New Era developed some of their best-selling New Era 59FIFTY caps. These hats set the benchmark by which all baseball caps have been judged since. Another famous style was New Era 5950 hats made popular by hip hop icons and urban figureheads such as Spike Lee.
