Rogue Status's Background

Rogue Status was set up in 2005 in Los Angeles by two trendy new designers Rex Holloway and Johan Esbensen. Originally from Canada, Esbensen in particular had dreamed of setting up his own clothing label for some time. He was a big fan of the Union label and often dropped by the original store and spoke with the main man himself Chris Gibbs. Esbensen was heavily immersed in the skater and snowboarder scenes and had thought about going pro at one point. However when he realised this was no longer possible he put his energies into other projects. Esbensen had many odd jobs early in his working life from ski lift attendant through to trailer repair man. He was a big fan of the laid back lifestyle of sunny California and was offered the chance to open the new UNDFTD Santa Monica store by Chris Gibbs.
In 2000 Esbensen conceived the AWOL t-shirt idea whilst working at UNDTFD. These shirts were handed out to try and attract repeat customers and create a more loyal fan base for the store. The t-shirts proved a big hit and this inspired Esbensen to create more designs. The idea of the Board of Authority t-shirts came out next and top pro-skateboarder Rob Dyrdek got hold of a few. He was impressed by the design and went to see Esbensen at the store. The idea of setting up a new urban wear label was discussed and soon Travis Barker (drummer with top band Blink-182 and entrepreneur) was also on board. A partnership was formed and with fellow designer Holloway the Rogue Status clothing line was launched in 2005.
