Background

In 1991 two friends Richard Woolcott and Tucker Hall set off on a snowboarding trip. Little did they know at the time but this was about to change their lives. Woolcott and Hall were impressed with the lifestyle surrounding snowboarding and after a few days of perfect snow conditions they were hooked. Woolcott even quite his job to take more time out for more snowboarding just two weeks after they returned. Tucker had just been laid off and they both started talking about setting up a new clothing line.

Later that spring they borrowed $5,000 from Woolcott's dad and started to set up Volcom.

Although Woolcott and Hall did not know much about making clothes at first they had some great ideas about the ethic of the brand they wanted to create. They spent the first two years immersed in the snowboard and skate lifestyle taking in the sights and enjoying the vibe. At this time the establishment very much looked down on this carefree lifestyle and they decided that their main brand philosophy would be ˜youth against establishment'. They wanted to support youthful creative thinking and throw off the shackles of established ways. At first the company was run from Woolcott's and Tuckers bedrooms. From here the brand grew and began to attract a loyal fan base. Within just a few years Volcom had achieved an international following and the clothing range had expanded to encompass Volcom hoodies, caps, jeans and more.
